If you've kept up with this blog, you already know that we're big fans of the Environmental Working Group and the wealth of information they offer consumers. Last month they began their Healthy Home Tips Series for Parents. Folks from the Charlotte, NC area may recognize her from her weather reporting days, but Terri's Do Your Part initiative should earn her recognition across the state and beyond! Do They Have This Stuff on Snopes?

Check out The Christian Science Monitor's discussion of Climate Culture's Top 10 Green Living Myths! There are some things that may really surprise you, and it highlights the reason why critical thinking skills are such a fundamental focus of environmental education. Recycled paper is always better than virgin paper, right? Well, not necessarily according to the list. There are so many factors that we need to consider that the answer to "what's best for the environment?" can get pretty tricky. This list and the discussion and comments that follow will definitely get you thinking, and that's a good thing!

Mother (Nature's) Little Helper

The latest in green news is MNN - Mother Nature Network. You know this won't be your run-of-the-mill news site when the Chuck Leavell, keyboardist for the Rolling Stones, is the founder and director of environmental affairs. MNN covers loads of topics including transportation, business, food, home and family. It also offers a wide range of blogs, RSS feeds and photo galleries. In March of this year, MNN Local will be launched, with students reporting from college campuses aross the country. That's not the only way that folks out in the community can get involved. MNN doesn't just invite you to read their blogs, they invite you to ceate your own blog on their site. With so many features, it's sure to bring some satisfaction (sorry, I couldn't help it).

Bill Nye is Back

The whole point of Eco-Smart Consumer is to help illustrate the connections between natural resources and our everyday actions. I don't think anybody puts this idea quite as simply as Bill Nye in the title of his show "Stuff Happens." Yep, that Bill Nye, the Science Guy...he's back! On his show Stuff Happens, which airs on Planet Green, Nye seeks to explain what happens when we use stuff, make stuff and toss stuff and how it can impact the environment. He does so in a manner that is both easy to understand and upbeat. So, whether you're eating breakfast, in the garage or on the beach, stuff is happening...and Bill Nye can tell you what it is!

The Think Tank for All Things Warm and Fuzzy

Have you noticed lately that you see a lot of commercials brought to you by some group that you've never heard of and whose name sounds wholesome and vague? The Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow or the Environmental Literacy Council, for example. Consumer Reports has put together a fun little matching game in which your goal is to match the name of the think tank to its mission, and it is surprisingly difficult! Give it a try, and to learn more you can visit frontgroups.org, a joint project between Consumer Reports and the Center for Media and Democracy. Frontgroup.org is based on the principle that, as FCC commissioner Jonathan Adelstein said, "the American public deserves to know when someone is trying to persuade them."
